QIL - Sir Francis Bacon

"Nay, number (itself) in armies, importeth not much, where the people is of weak courage; for (as Virgil saith) it never troubles the wolf how many the sheep be."

The reference to Virgil (or Vergil) is one Publius Vergilius Maro, considered Rome's greatest poet who chronicled the founding of Rome in the Aeneid, and more specifically from the (translated) passage:

"Here is a hearth, and resinous logs, here fire
Unstinted, and doors black with ceaseless smoke.
Here heed we Boreas' icy breath as much
As the wolf heeds the number of the flock,
Or furious rivers their restraining banks."

",,,it never troubles the wolf how many the sheep be."

Rather apropos for our time wouldn't you say?
